Spain (Spanish: España, [esˈpaɲa] (listen)), formally the Kingdom of Spain[13] (Spanish: Reino de España),[a][b] is a country in Southwestern Europe with some pockets of territory in the Mediterranean Sea, offshore in the Atlantic Ocean and across the Strait of Gibraltar.[13] Its continental European territory is situated on the Iberian Peninsula, and its insular territory includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, several small islands in the Alboran Sea and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish territory also includes the African semi-exclaves of Ceuta, Melilla and Peñon de Vélez across the Strait of Gibraltar.[14][h] The country’s mainland is bordered to the south by the British overseas territory of Gibraltar, to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea; to the north by France, Andorra and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean.
With an area of 505,990 km2 (195,360 sq mi), Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe, the second-largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fourth-largest country by area on the European continent. With a population exceeding 47.4 million, Spain is the sixth-most populous country in Europe, and the fourth-most populous country in the European Union. Spain’s capital and largest city is Madrid; other major urban areas include Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Málaga, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Bilbao.

Canary Islands
The Canary Islands (/kəˈnɛəri/; Spanish: Canarias, pronounced [kaˈnaɾjas]), also known informally as the Canaries, is a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, in a region known as Macaronesia. At their closest point to the African mainland, they are 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Morocco. They are the southernmost of the autonomous communities of Spain, and are located in the African Tectonic Plate. The archipelago is economically and politically European, and is part of the European Union.[4][5]
The eight main islands are (from largest to smallest in area) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. The archipelago includes many smaller islands and islets, including Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste, and Roque del Este. It also includes a number of rocks, including those of Salmor, Fasnia, Bonanza, Garachico, and Anaga. In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to as “the Fortunate Isles”.[6] The Canary Islands are the southernmost region of Spain, and the largest and most populous archipelago of Macaronesia.[7] Because of their location, the Canary Islands have historically been considered a bridge between the four continents of Africa, North America, South America, and Europe.[8]

Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria (UK: /ˌɡræn kəˈnɛəriə, -ˈnɑːr-/, US: /ˌɡrɑːn kəˈnɑːriə, -ˈnɛər-/;[2][3] Spanish pronunciation: [ɡɾaŋ kaˈnaɾja]), also Grand Canary Island, is the third largest and second most populous island of the Canary Islands,[4] an archipelago off the Atlantic coast of Northwest Africa which is part of Spain. As of 2019 the island had a population of 851,231 that constitutes approximately 40% of the population of the archipelago. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the island, is the biggest city of the Canary Islands and the ninth of Spain.
Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean in a region known as Macaronesia about 150 kilometres (93 mi) off the northwestern coast of Africa and about 1,350 km (840 mi) from Europe.[5] With an area of 1,560 km2 (602 sq. mi)[6] and an altitude of 1,956 m (6,417 ft) at Morro de la Agujereada, Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the archipelago in both area and altitude. Gran Canaria is also the third most populated island in Spain.[7]

Journey to Gran Canaria 06.-09.11.2021
On my journey to Gran Canaria, Canary islands, Spain I learned a lot about the situation here.
Las Palmas is the capital of the island and offers the nice flair of a Spanish style big city.
Many Spaniards are full of fear of covid. They wear their masks anywhere inside and also outside on the street.
Many peoole drive alone in their car and wear a mask.
You are obliged to wear a mask when you enter a restaurant. You can sit at the table without mask.
The Spanish term for mask is masqueria and it seems a little bit like carneval to me.
There are many coworking and coliving spaces in the whole city.
No matter where you live, you can reach one of the beaches easily by walking.
Las Canteras beach is the nicer beach for swimming but very small when the tide comes in.
The other beach Playa de las Alcavaneras is not so nice for swimming because there are many boats and the big port nearby.
But this is the only place with a beach volleyball field and some volleyball players I could find.
The weather in Las Palmas is a lot different than in the south of the island.
Due to the mountains, the clouds stay in the north so that the sun only comes out in the afternoon.
This is why I travelled on to Maspalomas in the very south.
I walked along the famous Playa del ingles and reached the Maspalomas lighthouse after sunset.
The dunes of Maspalomas are a natural reserve for seldom birds.
The dunes look lika a real desert and they also offer camel tours through the “desert”.
There is no volleyball field in Maspalomas. However, the coliving space in Las Dunas also includes some sportive possibilities.
The area was built from scratch as a tourist ressort.
There was no fishermen village before so it does not have an ancient town.
Personal freedom is very high.
The beach of Maspalomas has no rules for wearing bathing clothes.
Many people lie naked between FKK Bude 1 & 2 (German for nudist kiosk).
Homosexual couples of both sexes (gay & lesbian) are everywhere hugging and kissing, also in restaurants.
When I was swimming along the beach and got out of the water, I was surrounded by hundreds of naked, gay men.
They also show the gay pride flag in the middle of the touristic center at Playa del Ingles.
The police occasionally shows up at the beach, but does not do anything.
The other local guy told me that there is no crime problem anywhere. Everything is peaceful and very relaxed. The hotels and villa complexes are guarded by security staff, but no robbery was reported also during the season of 2020 when fewer people came due to the covid crisis.
The next day, I went swimming in the Atlantic ocean. The water temperature was very warm with approx. 24 degrees Celsius.
Due to the heavy wind, the waves were very high (2-3 meters) and you could hardly get in and out of the water.
On Monday, I gave it another try. Spoke with the baywatch guy to clarify the risks and how far out I could swim. We agreed on 100-200 meters maximum.
In the end, I stayed 50 meters within the coastline as the waves where coming from all sides. I managed to swim around 500 meters but had to give up after I swallowed water 3 times.
The baywatch guy recommended Fuerteventura island where the sand on the beach is white and the water is calm.
The last spot I visited on Monday was Bahia Feliz. Only there could I get a handmade Paella for one person and una copa de Sangria.
